Bringing two organisations together through a unified identity platform
Summary
Intelogy partnered with a global leader in audio visual solutions to deliver the integration of a recently acquired UK business into their global Active Directory environment.
Unlike a traditional acquisition where Microsoft 365 environments are merged, both organisations were already operating within the same Microsoft 365 tenant. This introduced a unique identity challenge: the acquired organisation’s Active Directory environment needed to become the new source of authority for users and devices while preserving the existing Microsoft Entra identities, licences, access permissions and collaboration experience that users relied on every day.
Building on our long-standing partnership and proven expertise in delivering complex Microsoft cloud and identity projects, Intelogy was engaged to design and deliver a structured migration that aligned with the client’s long-term global identity strategy.
Drawing on more than two decades of Microsoft infrastructure and cloud experience, we developed a migration approach that balanced technical complexity with business continuity. The project not only integrated the acquired organisation into the client’s global directory services but also established a consistent identity platform capable of supporting future growth, improved security and simplified administration.
At the heart of the project was the migration of Active Directory users, groups and devices into the global domain, together with the careful realignment of Microsoft Entra identities so that existing cloud accounts seamlessly mapped to their new on-premises source of authority. Windows and macOS devices were successfully migrated between domains while preserving user profiles, settings and day-to-day productivity, ensuring users experienced minimal disruption throughout the transition.
Challenges
The acquired organisation operated within its own independent Active Directory domain, with users, groups, devices, policies and security controls that had evolved separately over many years.
The project presented several significant technical and operational challenges:
- Migrating users, groups and computer objects into the global Active Directory domain without impacting authentication, access to business applications or user productivity.
- Realigning existing Microsoft Entra identities to a new synchronisation source while ensuring existing cloud accounts, Microsoft 365 licences, Teams data, SharePoint permissions and application access remained intact.
- Migrating both Windows and macOS devices between domains while preserving user profiles, device configurations and the familiar user experience.
- Reconciling differences in organisational structure, group memberships, security models and Group Policy configurations across both environments.
- Identifying application and infrastructure dependencies to ensure critical business services continued operating throughout the migration.
- Delivering the migration alongside wider business transformation activities with carefully managed risk, governance and communication.
This was far more than a traditional domain migration. Success depended on coordinating on-premises identity, cloud identity synchronisation, endpoint migration and user change management as a single, carefully orchestrated programme.
Solution Overview
Intelogy worked closely with both technical and business stakeholders to develop a structured migration strategy that balanced business continuity with long-term strategic goals.
The engagement began with a comprehensive assessment of the existing environments, allowing us to understand identity structures, security models, device estates and application dependencies. This discovery phase enabled us to identify potential risks early, validate the target architecture and create a phased migration approach tailored to the client’s operational requirements.
Rather than treating the project as a simple technical migration, we designed an end-to-end integration programme covering identity, devices, security and user experience. Every stage was carefully planned to ensure Active Directory identities could be successfully migrated and aligned with the organisation’s existing Microsoft Entra accounts, preserving user access to Microsoft 365 services throughout the transition.
With a clear delivery roadmap and runbook in place, Intelogy managed the migration in close partnership with the client’s internal teams. Through structured governance, proactive communication and rigorous validation, we ensured each phase was completed with minimal disruption while maintaining confidence across both technical teams and business stakeholders.
The result was a successful integration into the client’s global identity platform, delivered with minimal impact to end users and providing a secure, scalable foundation for future acquisitions and continued business growth.
Client Benefits & Results
Comprehensive migration strategy
The client received a detailed migration strategy supported by a complete understanding of the source environment, enabling the acquisition to be integrated into the global identity platform with confidence and minimal operational risk.
Reduced uncertainty
The discovery activities and strategic roadmap removed uncertainty from the programme, allowing project teams to accurately plan resources, timelines and technical dependencies well in advance of implementation.
Better informed decision making
Combining detailed technical analysis with collaborative stakeholder workshops enabled informed decisions around migration sequencing, security alignment, identity management and operational priorities, reducing risk throughout the project.
