Building the foundations for Information Governance with Microsoft Purview

Summary

A large UK utilities organisation worked with Intelogy to implement Microsoft Purview following the rollout of Microsoft 365 E5 licences across the organisation. Through a phased programme of discovery, design and deployment, Intelogy helped establish the foundations for information protection, sensitivity labelling and data governance across Microsoft 365.

Challenges

The organisation recognised the opportunity to use Microsoft Purview to improve visibility of information and strengthen how sensitive information was identified, classified and protected.

They had the following ambitions for the project:

  • Understand the capabilities available within Microsoft Purview
  • Identify priority use cases for the business
  • Develop an implementation approach aligned to their compliance requirements, including considerations around data classification, information governance, security, permissions and collaboration.

The organisation wanted to ensure that any deployment was supported by training and change management to help users understand the new ways of working.

Solution Overview

Intelogy delivered a structured Microsoft Purview implementation programme covering discovery, design, deployment, pilot and wider rollout.

The project began with a series of Art of the Possible workshops to help them understand the capabilities available within Microsoft Purview, focusing on information protection, sensitivity labels, data loss prevention and reporting capabilities. This was followed by a baseline assessment of the Microsoft 365 tenant, current and future state workshops and content discovery activities using Microsoft Purview tools.

By working closely with stakeholders, Intelogy collected the requirements and translated them into a solution design, implementation and user adoption plan.

Our team configured and tested the solution, including classification and labelling policies ahead of the pilot deployment. We collaborated with small groups to gather feedback and refine the set policies before proceeding with a wider rollout.

Following the implementation, Intelogy returned to review adoption, usage and reporting challenges. Recommendations were provided to help further identify sensitive information, understand behaviour surrounding sensitive information, improve reporting and analytics, refine labelling approaches and extend future information protection controls.

Client Benefits & Results

The engagement provided the organisation with an implemented Microsoft Purview foundation and a structured approach to information protection and governance.
