Creating a future proof data platform for East Anglian Air Ambulance with Microsoft Fabric

Summary

For over 25 years, East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has been one of the UK’s most pioneering air ambulance charities. Operating two helicopters and rapid response vehicles across four counties, they have completed over 43,500 missions, treated more than 27,000 patients, and supported over 1,800 patients in 2025 alone. Their reputation for operational and clinical innovation is well established, and as Rob Chetwood, Head of Insight, Information & Technology explained:

“We’re often at the vanguard of what’s happening, not just clinically, but across operations too. There’s a real culture of innovation here.”

EAAA partnered with Intelogy to design and build a Microsoft Fabric data warehouse to consolidate their data sources and improve data transformation and reporting performance across Power BI to support future growth across the charity.

Challenges

EAAA relies on several interconnected systems, including Dynamics 365 for fundraising, Business Central for finance, a bespoke HEMS Ops operational system, email marketing tools, website integrations and third-party donation platforms.

Together, these systems generate large volumes of data and as reporting needs grew, performance issues became increasingly disruptive.

Power BI was becoming a bottleneck:

“Power BI can do transformations, but it struggles when it’s doing them in bulk. Reports slowed everything down, your laptop freezes, and you can’t work.”

At the same time, organisational demand for data was rapidly accelerating. As colleagues became more data literate, reporting requirements grew more complex. EAAA’s in-house Business Intelligence (BI) team needed an environment that could support these demands.

And most importantly, EAAA wanted to remain ahead of the curve:

“As our reporting gets more sophisticated, we didn’t want to hit a ceiling. This was about future proofing before things became a problem.”

Solution Overview

Intelogy and EAAA worked collaboratively to design a Microsoft Fabric data warehouse solution aligned with the charity’s long term goals.

Discovery workshops

Intelogy hosted discovery workshops to map requirements, understand current reporting challenges and data quality constraints and evaluate the dataset for the priority use case. Dynamics 365 tables were profiled to assess structures, volumes and quality, forming the basis for schema design.

Rob expressed how accessible the process felt:

The team from Intelogy made it easy to understand without overwhelming jargon. Even when talking through technical things, nothing felt alienating.

Designing the architecture and delivery

The solution was built around a medallion architecture and delivered on Microsoft Fabric:

  • Bronze: Raw data from Dynamics 365 and other systems
  • Silver: Cleaned, validated and aligned to source schemas
  • Gold: Structured star-schemas ready for reporting
Fabric Medallion Structure

Lakehouse components within OneLake store and surface the data at each stage of the pipeline. Fabric Pipelines run on a scheduled basis, orchestrating ingestion and triggering Spark Notebooks to handle the cleansing, shaping and transformation logic. The underlying platform is built to grow, with additional data sources, pipelines and semantic models able to be onboarded as requirements expand.

This approach brought flexibility and structure, but most importantly, it ensured EAAA could confidently build upon the model over time.

Weekly project meetings kept everyone aligned, with clear updates on progress, budget and risks.

“The collaboration and the project management were excellent. Everything was clear, on track, and the technical delivery was brilliant.”

Reporting

To validate the model, Intelogy worked closely with EAAA’s BI analyst to develop a prototype Power BI report on the dataset. A semantic model defined relationships and calculations to support consistent, maintainable reporting.

Training

Recorded training sessions were provided to ensure ownership and future development. The training proved invaluable:

Our Business Intelligence analyst felt comfortable with the coding language and confident enough to take on future work herself, and that says everything about how well it went.
